Use food as art in your next design project
Design inspiration comes from everything and everywhere. From a far fetched imagination to the everyday mundane. Designers see beauty in many different ways. Take food for example. The bold and vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables are inspirations for color palettes. The various shapes and textures lend to the design of materials and furniture. Another way food finds its way into design is through art and photography. Food in it’s purest form can be visually stimulating. Food photography can be almost sculptural and can find itself in many design styles. From country design to sophisticated, elegant high fashion design and everywhere inbetween you can find an image of food to fit your tastes. Take for instance the images Conde Nast offers. The colorful images of sardine cans lend a vintage feel for a retro kitchen design. The colors and textures of mushrooms, tomatoes and eggplant give a modern OR traditional kitchen interest. An apple peel or a single lettuce leaf create an artistic image that goes beyond the simple food that they represent.
A kitchen is the celebration and creation of food and family. Why not glorify the materials with which you use in the kitchen? Food as the subject of your decorating will not only invite conversation but a unique design element that adds color, texture and interest to your space. Either purchase a print someone has taken or head out to the farmers market this spring with your camera and snap away! Experiment in your own kitchen with your fuits and vegetables and see what you can create – no cooking needed!
